Designed as a minimally invasive treatment for type 3 thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, the Medtronic® Valiant TAAA Stent Graft System is an off-the-shelf endovascular solution to one of surgery’s most difficult pathologies. Patrick Kelly, MD, the inventor of the device, explains, “The mortality rate is 25% when treating a TAAA with an open surgical technique, which involves cutting open the aorta. Providing the patient with an option for a less-invasive approach is needed.”
Aneurysms of the descending aorta that involve the branches vessels of the visceral segment are complex and can be challenging for the surgeon and risky for the patient. Traditional open repairs are invasive and require aortic clamping that can lead to mesenteric and lower limb ischemia.
Sanford Vascular Innovations, in collaboration with Medtronic, is developing an endovascular system that is off-the-shelf, allows for continuous perfusion throughout the case, and superior flow mechanics as studied in with finite element analysis. The device is currently in clinical trials.

Get more information on throacoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA) and how Sanford Vascular Innovations is helping to treat them.
First, the bifurcation is deployed from a groin approach for proximal seal.
Then the visceral manifold is deployed within a limb of the thoracic bifurcation.
Once the visceral manifold is in place, the celiac, SMA, and both renal arteries are stented from an arm approach to create endobypasses.
And finally, the other limb of the thoracic bifurcation is extended distally followed by standard infrarenal repair to create delayed distal seal.
